It's OK to NOT be an Entrepreneur!

I know your Instagram is full of people who said goodbye to a 9-5 job. They take meetings in the Bahamas and are six or seven-figure earners.. who doesn’t want that life? I mean it sounds AWESOME...right?

But the truth about entrepreneurship is that it is not for the weak at heart. It takes a ton of discipline and there will be seasons of famine before there are seasons of harvest..let that sink in for a minute. I remember one year calling my mother in tears- hysterical tears with the ugly face because I didn’t have enough money to pay my team. I had over 40k of unpaid invoices out there… Yes, 40k. Services done and happy clients, but no money, and I had 3 days until I had to pay my team. How embarrassing to be in your late 30’s and have to call your mom for help. I should be buying my mom a home and a car like all the other entrepreneurs, right?

I’m sharing this story because somehow we have come to believe that having a 9 to 5 job isn’t a good thing and the truth is, I know many people with traditional jobs that are thriving and I admire their hustle. 6 figure incomes, profit sharing, paid days off, great benefits- for the right job I might even reconsider my choices lol.

Another “myth” to debunk is that when you are an entrepreneur you are your own boss, well, you are not, but, every single client you have is, to some degree. And, unfortunately, unless you are a major influencer like Bozeman (who works for corporate America btw) you can’t just show up to a meeting in your pajamas and an eye mask.

If you really think that you want to take on the entrepreneurial life consider the following before leaving your 9 to 5.

  1. Are you disciplined enough to start your workday every day, on time? Every morning I am in my “office” by 8:30. There is no boss checking my sign-in time, just me holding myself accountable for my clients and my work.

  2. Are you ready to let go of a steady paycheck?... at least at first.  When I started my business cash flow was a major issue and is still challenging, but I have systems in place to manage cash flow and I’ve never had to ask my mom for money- WIN!!

  3. Are you able to pivot? Each customer or client will have different needs, desires, and wants, will you be able to adapt and deliver? Can you be flexible to their needs and control your emotions or do you get frustrated easily and show it? When you meet your client’s needs and they are happy with you and your work, you know it.  They will refer you to others for services or send you more business, buy more products, etc, but, if you can’t help make their dreams come true they will be gone and they will tell their friends why they left!

  4. Is your “job” really that bad? Are there opportunities at work that you haven’t tapped into? Have you considered leadership programs or opportunities in different departments? Talk to your supervisor about your professional goals and you may find that your entrepreneurial dreams are really better suited for you as a hobby or, at best, a part-time job, which is a good thing! It’s always great to have multiple streams of income and people with hobbies report feeling happier than 50% of people who have none.

The moral of the story is, don’t get caught up in thinking the grass is always greener...you need to constantly care for it to keep it that green….are you prepared to dedicate that much of yourself to your job?  If you’ve confidently answered all of these questions and still feel that the entrepreneurial life is for you, then I can help!
